Saying Goodbye!

Well, today is the last day of the school year and what a year it has been!  Looking back through our blog, we have done a lot of different things. We've been making musical instruments, climbing up rock walls, visiting animals in the zoo, getting very wet around Guandu Nature Park, being Egyptians and wrapping people up as mummies.  We have made some dioramas and written descriptions about them. We've recorded our own stories and made our own videos.  We have achieved so much in one year.

Sadly, though, we are saying goodbye to a few friends. Wen Ting is going back to Singapore, and Jeremy A and Patrick are off the another school in Taipei. All of them will be missed very much.
I am off too. My family and I are heading to Tianjin, China to start a new adventure there. I will be able to look back at all of the work and photos we've posted over the year and remember everyone.

We have been thinking about to what to post in our last post. Here are our reflections:

Quest Myths

We have been busy over the last few weeks finding out about quest myths. We have read and watched different quest myth stories before planing and writing our own. We planned who our main hero was going to be and decided what the quest was that they were about to go on. We then planned the creature- who or what was it that the hero had to defeat?
We drew a map of the route our hero would have to take to be able to complete their quest.
Below are our stories. We decided to publish them as recordings and tried to put expression into our voices as we read.
Sit back and listen to what we came up with.

Egypt Day

Yesterday, we had Egypt Day. We dressed up as different Egyptians and spent the morning doing different activities.
First of all, we designed our own Egyptian God or Goddess head dress and thought about what they were the God of. We had some interesting ideas for that!
Then we went to the sports hall to play games with the other 2 classes. We had to work in teams of 6 to wrap one of our team members up as a mummy. It was lots of fun and some people did a great job!

Here are some of the photos of us:

A day in the life of an Ancient Egyptian farmer

We were thinking about what life as an Ancient Egyptian farmer might have been like. We used the picture from a previous blog post and discussed the types of jobs they did.  We chose a job each and wrote about a day in the life of that farmer.

Here are some of our interviews and conversations:

Advice from Dr. Seuss

I was sent a link to some Dr. Seuss quotes and I quite liked this one:
You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself
any direction you choose.
You are in control of what you do - we can't do it for you!

Ancient Egyptian Farming Picture

This is the farming picture that I sent home for homework the other day. I think it is a much clearer picture for you to look.  What do you think the jobs are that they are doing?

Questions to think about:
What might it have been like to have done one of these jobs?
Which job would want to have done and why?
How do you think these jobs have changed?

It seemed that only half of the instructions made it into the book yesterday, so here is part 2!
If you didn't find a musical instrument you fancied making in the first part, maybe one of these will interest you. Give one a go - you know you want to!

Fractions games

Mrs. Elrick's maths group have become board games designers! They have spent a couple of days planning, designing and making their own board game. The theme of each game is 'Fractions'. We have been finding fractions of numbers, finding equivalent fractions and ordering fractions.  The games that we designed used one of these elements.
Take a look at what we did:

What are your views on these different pieces of music?

You have now all finished your projects where you focused on a particular musician or style of music. You will be sharing those with the class next week.

Here are some pieces of music from the musicians you have chosen to focus on. Listen to the pieces that are included and leave a comment saying what you think of this style of music. How does the music make you feel? Do you like it? Would you choose to listen to more of it?

Music Makers!

We have finally finished making our musical instruments (apart from a few ones that need to be fixed!) and they are looking very good.
One group of early finishers got together to compose, practice and perform their own music. They worked together to create the sounds that they wanted and did a great job of performing in front of the class this afternoon.

Sit back and enjoy their work!

Next week, everyone will have the chance to compose a piece of music and perform with a band - so get your creative minds working over the weekend ready for some song/music writing on Monday!

Thinking about music

We have been doing lots of work on sound and music. We have music all around us in our lives. But what would happen if music were suddenly to be banned? How would you feel?  Use this Voice-Thread to record your responses.

Revolting Recipes

Are you bored of eating the same things each day?
Do you want something different to try?
Then how about choosing one of our recipes. They are truly delicious!

(Did we say delicious? We meant to say revolting!)

Today, we worked in pairs to come up with a revolting recipe of our own. Here are some of the ingredients that 5 of the groups would use:

Slug Slime Waffles
by Jeremy L and Toby

Crunch Crab Cake
by Poppy and Leonna

Mosquito Macaroni
by Elliott and Benjamin

Stink Sausages
by Alice and Jihyun

Worm Spaghetti
by Grace and Katelyne

Later on, we will be turning these ingredients into recipes that you can follow and make at home. So, if you're stuck for ideas for an afternoon snack or want something different to make for dinner, give one of these a try!

Investigating sound

We have been doing lots of investigations over the last couple of weeks about how a sound is made and how it can be changed.
Here are a few of the things we found out.

Emma explained 2 ways in which sound can be made:

Leonna found out that sounds are made when something vibrates:

Jihyun applied what she had found in the rubber band investigation to plan her own musical instrument. She knows that to change the pitch you need to change the thickness or the length of the string. How tight or loose the string is also affects how high or low the note is.

In the next part of our topic, we will be making our own musical instruments and writing instructions for how to make them. Maybe you can make our instruments following the instructions we write!

Changing sounds investigation

We have been learning about how a sound is made. We have played different instruments and found out how each one makes it's sound.
We were then looking at how the sound can be changed.  We did an investigation into how to change sound in some way. Here are some of our findings:
(the sound quality is not too clear as other groups were using the instruments as we were filming!)

Carnivale time!

This week saw us getting dressed up for Carnivale. This is a European celebration to mark the beginning of Lent. The theme this year was 'Your favourite book character'. We had lots of fun and colourful costumes. We paraded around the infant and junior playground before watching some clowns entertain us.
To end the morning, we went back to the class to eat crepes - yummy!

29th February - Blogging the Leap Year!

This year is a leap year and to mark the occasion, there is a going to be a special blog set up for the day.  We have to opportunity to leave our thoughts and comments for others around the world to see, comment on and add to.  We will be using part of our morning composing our posts and will view what others have posted later on in the day.
This is the blog site, if you want to read the information that is there:

So, the only thing to do now is to think about what you're going to say! What do you want the world to know?

Our Class Assembly!

Here, as promised, is our class assembly. It has taken a while to download and process (and I didn't get chance to edit the very beginning noise out) but here it is. I hope you enjoy watching it and are able to share it with others who were not able to be present on the day. I think you did a fantastic job - well done!

(Thank you to Mr. MacRaild for being cameraman!)

Symmetry

We were looking at symmetry in shapes today in Maths and I came across this which I thought you might like to 'play' with. Just type in your first name then press go, then do the same with your surname.
Enjoy!
